Barcelona to Sack Setién

Since the return of La Liga after its suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Barcelona side has had a hard time keeping their position at the top of the table. Their coach, Quique Setién, doesn’t seem to have improved the team’s form since he took over from the former coach Ernesto Valverde in January this year.

Both fans and the club’s board expressed their dissatisfaction with the results produced by the Barcelona team. Although they haven’t lost any match since their return from lockdown, they lost their position as first on the table, to their rivals Real Madrid, who on the other hand seem to be unstoppable. The fans’ anger towards the coach was further fueled by his negative comments on Arthur Mélo, an ex-Barcelona player who was recently involved in a swap deal with Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic – a deal which many criticise. The relationship between the coach and the players in the dressing room seems to be deteriorating. This is suggested by videos circulating on Twitter showing players snubbing instructions from the assistant coach, Eder Sarabia.

The club president, Josep Bartomeu, held a meeting with the coach today to discuss his future at the club. A clause in the Setién’s contract makes it possible for the coach to leave at the end of the season.

With 6 matches left in the fixtures, the coach will have to prove himself at the club. Tonight’s fixture will be a huge factor to determine Setién’s future at the club as they face Athletico Madrid – another Spanish giant.
