FIFA has decided to take action regarding the possibility of the opening of the closed European Superleague and has communicated in agreement with the continental institutions.

The European Superleague keeps talking. Some leaders of the biggest European clubs were looking to set up this project, but FIFA and UEFA decided to put the stop today.

In an official statement released by FIFA, in agreement with its six continental confederations (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, CONCACAF, OFC and AFC), confirmed that it would not recognize this competition.

And to ensure that this private competition does not see the light of day, FIFA will go even further, and threaten participating clubs and players with being excluded from FIFA competitions.

“Following recent speculations relayed by the media about the creation of a European” Super League “closed by certain European clubs, FIFA and the six confederations (AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA) wish to reiterate and to stress unambiguously that such a competition would not be recognized by either FIFA or the confederation concerned, ”FIFA began.

“Any club or player playing such a competition would be denied the right to participate in any competition organized by FIFA or its confederation,” said the largest institution in football in its statement.

A press release published a few days after a meeting between Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, and Andrea Agnelli, owner of Juventus, in Turin to discuss this famous project.

The full FIFA press release:

“Following recent speculations relayed by the media about the creation of a European” Super League “closed by certain European clubs, FIFA and the six confederations (AFC, CAF, Concacaf, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA) wish to reiterate and unambiguously stress that such a competition would not be recognized by either FIFA or the confederation concerned. As a result, any club or player competing in such a competition would be refused the right to participate in any competition organized by FIFA or his confederation.

In accordance with the statutes of FIFA and the confederations, all competitions must be organized or recognized by the competent body at their respective level, by FIFA at international level and by the confederation concerned at continental level. The confederations thus recognize the FIFA Club World Cup – in its current and new format – as the only world club competition and, for its part, FIFA recognizes the club competitions organized by the confederations as being the only continental interclub competitions.

The universal principles of sports merit, solidarity, promotion and relegation as well as subsidiarity form the basis of the football pyramid. They allow the discipline to be successful internationally and are as such enshrined in the statutes of FIFA as well as of the confederations. If football has such a long and glorious history, it is because of these principles. Participation in international and continental competitions must always be won on the ground. “
