The British government is considering allowing supporters to return to the stadiums for the last two days of the championship. The Premier League is hoping to get fans back into the stadiums this season for the final two days of the league, says general manager Richard Masters. The matches last year were largely played behind closed doors due to UK government restrictions on the coronavirus. However, with these restrictions starting to ease, Richard Masters hopes that all clubs can play in front of their own supporters before the end of the season. This week, it’s been exactly a year since a Premier League game has been played in front of a packed stadium: Leicester’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium on March 9, 2020.Competition was postponed soon after and did not resume until the June Restart, with all games behind closed doors. Restrictions were briefly relaxed in parts of the country in December, meaning some clubs were allowed to play in front of 2,000 scattered supporters. However, after a further rise in the number of cases, the country has been placed in full containment and supporters have again been excluded from stadiums.According to the government’s roadmap, 10,000 supporters (25% of the total capacity) will be able to return to the stadiums from Monday, May 17. The final round of Premier League matches are scheduled for May 22. In order for each team to be able to play at home with their supporters, another series of matches will have to be rescheduled from 18 to 20 May.It could be the 37th day, which is due to take place the previous weekend, or the 36th, which is scheduled for May 11-12. If cases continue to decline and the vaccination rollout goes as planned, all restrictions are expected to be lifted by June 21.Masters are therefore optimistic that the stadiums will return to full capacity in time for the start of next season. “I hope the last two matches of the season can accommodate up to 10,000 supporters,” he told Premierleague.com.“We have to take those initial first steps in the government’s roadmap to get there, so we hope it will be a fantastic finale to end the season.“Beyond that, from the start of next season, our goal is to have full stadiums and the government’s roadmap offers us this opportunity.”There is a lot to validate before that happens, but that is our ultimate goal: the return of full stadiums in the Premier League and the return to a normal Premier League.”
