More than 6 million FCFA reduced to ashes and many goods consumed. This is the sad toll of a fire that occurred on March 20, 2021 in the central market of Garoua, capital of the North region. According to witnesses, the flames started from a shop around 8 am and spread very quickly. A victim was said to have lost 6 million FCFA in cash, bags of rice, boxes of soap, detergents, just to name a few.

We were told that a short circuit caused by untimely cuts of the water caused the fire commence.

Informed the firefighters promptly intervened to contain the flames. They were joined at the scene of the disaster by the prefect of Bénoué, Oumarou Haman Ouabi and the mayor of the city of Garoua, Ousmaïla Mohamadou to comfort the victims. Both authorities said arrangements were made to secure all shops that were around the epicenter of the blaze.

They reassured that the bad occurrence has been circumscribed, while hoping that all precautions are now taken to avoid another disaster. This fire in the central market of Garoua comes just two weeks after the one that reduced the city’s fish market to ashes.
